Hi again! I'm Ayodhya, and in this post I'm going to share some study tips. So, as a ninth grader, I need to study a lot. I’ve come across a bunch of study tips, but I realize that some of them don’t exactly work for me. Like, the reward system, where you reward yourself with something good. The rewards can be a day off at the weekend or a break to watch TV. And those kinds of things don’t work for me. But I already found 4 study tips that actually work for me (finally!). So here they are:
1. Pay Attention in Class
Always pay attention in class. Always. At some points your teacher might mention important things. Like what kinds of questions that will be on the test or just some lessons you should focus on. Paying attention also shows that you’re ready to learn and shows respect to your teacher.
2. Take Notes!
Note taking actually helps you focus in class. It forces you to listen effectively. and when you write or summarize it, you can easily understand and remember the information you’ve already heard and written. Taking notes can also be fun! You can use colorful gel pens and highlighters. Make sure that your notes are neat and understandable too.
3. Study Group!
Study group is a pretty good idea. You can ask your friends for a little help on your materials, share each other's quiz questions or and fill in gaps in your notes. There’s a lot of benefits you can take by studying together. But don’t forget to form an effective study group. You should consider whom you want to study with. Study group will only work if it’s composed of people who are committed to achieving good grades. And stay focused. Really. Usually study groups are full of your friends, and you can be distracted by them (like me!). So focus on your learning! Don't end up hanging out and forgetting your study!
Tips: Try to study with some friends who come from different classes. In my school students are the ones who stay in class. Teachers will go around moving from class to class teaching. And in my grade there are 9 different classes. So, there are some teachers who only teach several classes, the other classes get other teachers. Say A teaches Math in 5 classes, so the 4 left classes get B to teaches them Math. This sometimes makes some classes get slightly different materials. Now this is where studying with friends from other classes becomes beneficial. You can easily get to share materials!
4. Break it down!
When you have a lot to study, it’s better to break it down into some small chunks. Now, let’s say you have 3 chapters to learn for your exam. Instead of forcing yourself to understand all the materials at once, try to study one chapter a day. By doing this, you won't feel overwhelmed and under pressure compared to when you study all at once.
This tip works so well for me! I always break my materials into parts, so I need some more days to study than most of my friends do. I usually start studying 5 days before I get the test. Sure it takes more time and a lot more energy to start studying earlier, but I get the materials and can memorize more things. So it's totally worth it.
